I have a new addition to my barn. His name is Lil Bit, for now. He is a rescue and is a 7 mo old Oldenberg and has some issues. There is a good possibility he has OCD. But we will wait for him to grow a bit more and of course monitor his weight and try to keep him from growing too fast. At present we are working on getting him over his issues with being over at the knee. While he was younger he developed this condition and splints were applied by a vet. When the splints seemed to have worked they were removed. Apparently the condition returned and the owner put the splints back on without the vets guidance, and the splints did damage to the cannon bones of both front legs. The previous owner's vet suggested he be euthenized. The owner advised the breeder of the dianosis. Since Lil Bit is the first born of this particular sire, the breeder asked for the baby back. My farrier, Natalie Cruz, told me about the colt. I have wanted a baby for a while so I picked him up about 2.5 weeks ago. He is very sweet. This past week he had a flare up of one of the injuries. I called my vet who assessed the extensor tendon was being affected and a sweat bandage was applied with a return visit planned for the next day for an ultra sound and possibly antibiotic injections into the muscle surrounding the tendons and the next. The vet was pleasantly suprised to see the wounds had come to a head and had begun to drain, but there was dirt and debris in the wound which had not been previously cleaned out. The wound was irrigated and cleaned and bandaged up and he is on Naxcel, 15 ml per day. That afternoon I noticed a huge difference in the little guy ... more spark in the eyes. And today he was mischevious. He is on stall rest, but when I go out to work at the barn or feed I let him out for a bit. All he has is time to get healthy ... Lil Bit has a lot of potential and I can't wait to see what he will be.
Lil Bit assemillated into my little group of geldings just fine. My alpha horse, Joey, a TB gray, is taking good care of Lil Bit and Hawk my Appie is being the big brother...picking and being there for support.
I will be posting from time to time on Lil Bit's health and training. Will most likely become a blog.
