Entertain your family with the triathlon of horse sports. Horse trials are the most exacting and exciting of all equestrian sports, as riders compete in dressage, cross-country, and show jumping.

The DC area of Northern Virginia has six local trail riders who are competing  in the AFTH auditions in Palmyra, VA at Saddle Creek Farm.  The participants are as follows:

We are all very excited about our venture and are really hoping one of us will represent Virginia at the 
Franklin Family Ranch, near Austin, Texas May 8th - 12th, 2011.  This is big doins for the six of us, there are prizes for being in the auditions, gas cards, feed just to name a few and the list is growing daily.  I spoke with Nancy, Saddle Creek Farm, this week when I made my reservations and she is very excited.  the way I look at it is just making the cut and going to Austin would be a hoot and an accomplishment.  cp
 

  16  SAT  Morven Park Dressage Series Championship                   

8 a.m. – 6 p.m.    Enjoy spring scenery at Morven Park and stop to watch beautiful horses flaunt their fanciest steps. Local and regional dressage riders compete, and the public is welcome at no charge to observe this graceful display of equine athleticism.

  17 SUN    Spring Flowers Trail Ride

 1 – 3 p.m.     Ride the wooded and pastured trails through Morven Park’s 1,000-acre site while learning about the native plants and their uses through the ages. This is a low-key ride, suitable for novice riders, but you must provide your own horse and hard riding hat.   

 

$30/horse & rider.

  24 SUN  Fairfax Hunt Steeplechase Races      
 Noon - 6 p.m. 
It’s a full day of fun featuring top jockeys and excellent horses. Post time for the first race is 1:30 p.m. Vendors’ row features food, jewelry, artisans, and more. Kids’ activities include a “moon bounce,” pony rides, and stick horse races.

General admission $15; under 12 free.

29   SUN     US TRAIL RIDE  (USTR) MEMORIAL DAY RIDE


Our 17th Annual Benefit Ride is just around the corner, Sunday May 29, 2011 at Glenwood Park in Middleburg, VA.

Last year's beneficiaries were:

Trot Search and Rescue

We welcome you to come out for a terrific ride over the wonderfully scenic and private trails rarely open for public riding. Ride 6 to 15 miles at your own pace.
 
Trails are well marked and range from gently rolling mixed fields/woods to more aggressive hills and river crossings. Ride the trail(s) right for you - there is something for everybody!

While you enjoy your ride and your lunch, remember you are helping us help some very worthy causes.

NEW  16-17   SAT - SUN     The Mid-Atlantic Small Draft Horse Festival is a celebration of the small draft breeds -- Gypsies, Haflingers, Fjords, Drum Horses and others.  This horse show offers classes in conformation by breed, riding, driving, costume and fun classes.  The show will be held on July 16 - 17, 2011 at Frying Pan Park in Herndon, VA.  This county park is a dedicated equine facility in the middle of suburban Northern Virginia.  It offers all the conveniences of the metropolitan Washington, DC area in a historic farm park setting.

Northern Virginia is the home of some very active horse organizations, Battlefield Equestrian Society, Clifton Horse Society, Farifax for Horses, Loudon Horse Association, Mason Neck Horse Association, Nokesville Horse Society, Back to Basics Horse Show Association, Northern Virginia Coalition of Equestrian Organizations, and Trailblazers.  One of the main objectives of these organizations is to ensure trails are open and stay open for all equestrians to use and enjoy.  Those of us who use these trails are very thankful.
